Should I be able to tell whether it’s early morning or late afternoon just by looking at the sky? In other words, is there a difference between the appearance of sunrise and sunset?

Answer

There is one big difference — but it requires a sense of direction on your part. The Sun rises in the east and sets in the west. If it’s directly overhead, it’s noon.
