They say I should let the ashes in my fireplace build up somewhat, but how much is best?
Answer
Let the ashes build up to 1 or 1 and 1/2 inches from the base of your andirons. This gives enough room for draft, and insulates the bottom of the coals, providing more heat against the wood. The ashes will also protect the floor of your fireplace from direct exposure to the hot fire.
