What is bead lightning?

Consider yourself lucky if you’ve seen this rare breed of lightning. It occurs when the lightning channel to the ground encounters some atmospheric obstacle and breaks up (or appears to, anyway) into glowing segments that look like beads or sausage links. The beads seem to persist longer than a normal lightning flash, usually for half a second or so.
