What is the method for counting the seconds between thunder and lightning to determine where the lightning struck?
Answer
When you see lightning, start counting. Thunder travels at a rate of 1 mile per 5 seconds. If you count out 10 seconds before hearing thunder, the storm is about 2 miles away. If you never hear the thunder after a flash of lightning, the storm is probably more than 20 miles away.
