What is the origin of the Toll House cookie?
Answer
Mrs. Ruth Wakefield, resident chef and baker at the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts, is credited with creating the Toll House Inn cookie in the early 1930s (the β€œInn” was later dropped from the name). Mrs. Wakefield added pieces of chocolate to her basic butter cookies using the Nestle Company’s semisweet chocolate bar. Nestle was so impressed with the recipe that the company asked permission to reprint it on its chocolate bar wrapper, thus putting Toll House cookies on the map and into the mouths of millions of Americans.
