Who came up with the words “skeleton key” and why did they call it that?
Answer
Although the precise origin of this phrase is uncertain, it came into use around 1810, and refers to a key with a large portion of the bit filed away, making it able to open many low-quality locks. It was thus reduced to its “skeleton”, and perhaps that’s how it acquired the name.
