Through much searching for the BEST pie ever, this Kentucky Derby Museum Pie comes straight from the “horse’s mouth.”

Editors’ note: Only Kern’s Kitchen Inc. can lay claim to the name, “Derby-Pie” which is described as “premium chocolate and choice walnuts folded into a decadent filling, then baked in Grandma Leaudra’s delicate crust.” The Almanac cook who submitted this recipe uses a mix of chocolate chips and pecans and was very happy with the results!

Ingredients
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 pinch salt
2 tablespoons Kentucky bourbon or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup chopped pecans
1 partially baked 9-inch piecrust
whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, flour, salt, and Kentucky Bourbon (or vanilla). Add chocolate chips and nuts. Stir well.
  3. Pour into partially baked piecrust and bake for 30 minutes, or until center is set.
  4. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
