Question of the Day
What does it mean to βpull out all the stopsβ?
This phrase means to put all one’s efforts and energies into something in order to have it succeed. It originally referred to an organ player, who must manipulate the numerous βstopsβ of the instrument to achieve the desired musical effect, usually involving both hands, both feet, and several keyboards. If all the stops were pulled out on many traditional organs, the volume would be intolerable.
