I just hung two containers of impatiens last week. They are in the shade all day. I water them daily and fertilized them last week after buying them. They do not seem to be doing well. The blossoms are smaller and not as open. Is this too much shade for them? Do they need some sun? I am watering them daily.
Thanks, Bill
Bill, get your plants into the sunshine as soon as possible! Impatiens need full sun—that’s six to eight hours per day. Without it, they will surely fail.
And once in the sun, water them to be damp but do not be afraid to let them dry out for short periods between waterings. All wet all the time is not good.
Hope you can save them!
I WOULD LIKE TO PLANT SOME IMPATIENS FOR A BURST OF COLOUR IN OUR FLOWER BED WHICH JUST HAS SOME BUSHES IN IT. IT GETS QUITE A BIT OF SUN MOST OF THE DAY,I HAVE HEARD THAT THERE IS A PLANT THAT CAN TAKE THE SUN, IS THIS CORRECT? I WOULD LIKE THEM TO STAY NEAR THE GROUND, NOT TOO HIGH, SO HOW FAR APART SHOULD I PLANT THEM? THANK YOU.
After doing some research, Ive realized I may be doing this wrong! I planted a full pot of impatiens, but the poor things sit under the sun all day! I water them every early morning..they seem to be doing ok, especially since Ive gotten rid of my garden slug problem!
The flowers do fall off rather easily..should I get them some shade for better blooming?
Impatients do grow well in shade but if your pot in the sun is healthy and doing well, there is no need to change location. You can experiment by planting some in a different pot and putting it in the shade to see if they will bloom more.
dont know why but the floweres were not open and fell off died why
I water my impatien flower everyday, but the tips of the leaves and flower stem are turning brown. Is this because I gave the plant too much? Or too little? How much water is enough? What is the exact amount (measurement) of water does it need?
You might be watering them too much. Let the soil dry out between waterings. It’s impossible to give an exact amount. Water when the soil is dry.
Some impatiens plants are also experiencing a downy mildew that causes severe defoliation and flower drop. Nursery and landscape plants were affected by the plants. We do not know if your plants are experiencing that. But you can learn more here: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/flowers/managing-impatiens-downy-mildew-in-landscape/
I have cared for my son's imapatien since he died 18 months ago. A month ago, it was big, leafy and blooming, then it started dropping leaves. Looked like little webs and mites on stems. Sprayed a natural house plant insecticide, but leaves still wilt and fall off. Please, help me save Nicky's plant, which he brought home for Mother's day when he was 7 years old.
It’s hard to get rid of spider mites. Check for reinfestation. Organic horticultural oils and soaps do help. Remove infested leaves and maybe cut some of the damaged stems.
