Unfortunately, in our humid climate the ornamental gourds I sow have always acted as a magnet for mildew... until this year when I sprayed them with a solution of bicarbonate of soda aka baking soda. This apparently changes the PH of the leaves so that fungal spores can't take hold. In any case, this is the first time ever that my plants haven't been affected by mildew. I can thoroughly recommend this treatment.
