Your cat has it pegged! The lunar effect is coming from outside where the moon shine is brightest(intensity), though it effects us indoors like an electro-static field. And we know electro-static fields can interact with the same fields in our brain. Also, the 2 days before and after I agree is intense as well because the reduction of moon shine is still reflecting a high percentage of the solar wind, during the moonlight phase called "Gibbous." Then the lunar phases descend to the "new moon" phase which means the moon is on the other side of the earth. Thanks for the cat observation!!
