When securing your first dog, it's a far better idea to consult a trainer, a groomer and a boarding kennel operator for reasonable ideas of easy-to-keep pets that are relatively bright, easy on maintenance and good keepers.

Breeders want to sell you a dog, "rescues" and shelters want to open up space for other dogs and both can be deceptive in their representations.

Do your research. Check online for health issues that plague virtually all purebred dogs and look for breeders who actively health test their breeding stock.

When you adopt a dog, you are adopting an unknown quantity, usually, in both issues of health and issues of temperament. Use best judgement and select the right dog for your lifestyle, not what your favorite celebrity owns, or because of some misguided memory.

Spend at least as much time on your selection process as you would for the purchase of your next car or appliance. A dog is for life, not just for convenience.
